Painting and Renovating Before You Move In: A Practical Guide for Ugandan Homes and Offices

The easiest time to renovate is before your furniture arrives. Empty rooms mean faster painting, no dust on your belongings and no working around your family or staff. Here is a sensible order of works for a home or office in Uganda.

1. Fix the building fabric first

• Roof leaks and blocked gutters — water will ruin new paint and ceilings.
• Cracked plaster and damp patches — find the cause before covering them.
• Plumbing and electrical faults — easier to fix before painting.

2. Upgrade windows, doors and security

Replacing old, leaking windows with aluminium windows or adding steel grills creates dust and damages paint, so do it before painting.

3. Ceilings and partitions

New ceilings or partitions should also go in before the final coat.

4. Painting

• Preparation is everything: scrape loose paint, fill cracks, sand and prime.
• Choose the right paint: washable finishes for corridors, kitchens and children's rooms; weather-resistant paint outside.
• Light colours make rooms feel bigger and cooler; test samples on the wall first.
